Which Salesforce Certification First in 2026?
- No computer science degree required
- Built for 3+ years of professional experience
- 10 industry certifications held by the founder
If you're switching into a Salesforce role, the first certification you pick decides how you spend the next two or three months. Pick well and you walk into interviews with proof that matches the job. Pick badly and you've paid for an exam that doesn't line up with the roles you're applying to. This guide sorts the beginner-friendly options, what each costs as of September 2026, and what changed this year. It's part of the career change to tech series.
For most career changers aiming at a Salesforce job, the first certification is Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator: $200 USD to register, $100 USD to retake, tax excluded. Platform Foundations costs $75 USD with free retakes, but it's an entry-level credential. You can prepare for either on Trailhead at no cost.
Which Salesforce certification should you get first?
For most people moving into a Salesforce role, Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator is the best first certification because it matches the Salesforce Administrator job title directly and covers the platform the other exams build on. Salesforce describes Platform Foundations as a fit for someone "with up to 6 months of Salesforce user experience," which makes it a good warm-up but a lighter signal on a resume. Agentforce Specialist gets a lot of attention right now, but Salesforce describes its holders as having a "deep understanding of both Salesforce platform configuration and Agentforce capabilities," so the platform comes first.
| Certification (current official name) | Registration fee | Retake fee | Who it suits as a first cert |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salesforce Certified Platform Foundations (formerly Salesforce Certified Associate) | $75 USD | Free | People who want a low-cost first step and have used Salesforce for a few months or less |
| Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator (formerly Salesforce Certified Administrator) | $200 USD | $100 USD | Most career changers targeting admin, analyst, or consultant roles |
| Salesforce Certified Agentforce Specialist | $200 USD | $100 USD | People who already know the platform and want to add AI agent skills |
| Salesforce Certified Business Analyst | $200 USD | $100 USD | A strong second cert for analyst roles, usually after Platform Administrator |
| Salesforce Certified Agentforce Sales Foundations (formerly Sales Foundations) | $75 USD | Free | Salespeople who want to show Salesforce sales know-how, not an admin credential |

What changed in Salesforce certifications in 2026?
Salesforce renamed 16 certifications on July 24, 2026, and will retire 24 more on February 1, 2027. This is a real change, not the usual release-cycle refresh. The beginner exams in the table above kept their names, but several consultant credentials that career changers aim for later now carry "Agentforce" in the title. The last day to register for a retiring exam was July 24, 2026, and the last day to sit one was August 31, 2026.
| Old name | New name since July 24, 2026 | Why a career changer should care |
|---|---|---|
| Salesforce Certified Sales Cloud Consultant | Salesforce Certified Agentforce Sales Consultant | A common second or third cert for admins moving toward consulting |
| Salesforce Certified Service Cloud Consultant | Salesforce Certified Agentforce Service Consultant | The same path, on the customer service side |
| Salesforce Certified Sales Foundations | Salesforce Certified Agentforce Sales Foundations | An entry-level option for people coming from sales jobs |
| Salesforce Certified Nonprofit Cloud Consultant | Salesforce Certified Agentforce Nonprofit Consultant | Relevant if you're coming from nonprofit work |
Source: Salesforce's July 2026 certification rename and retirement announcement, as summarized by Salesforce Time and Salesforce Ben, September 2026. Four of the 16 renames shown; check Trailhead Academy for the full list.
If you already hold one of the renamed certifications, you don't need to do anything; it updates on your Trailblazer profile. If you see an old name in a job posting or a study guide, it's the same credential. Guides that still use names like "Salesforce Certified Administrator" or "Sales Cloud Consultant" are not wrong about the content, just out of date on the label.
Which first certification matches your target role?
The right first certification depends on the job you're aiming for, and for some roles it isn't a Salesforce certification at all. Blazer2Role's program covers six target roles. Here is how a first credential lines up with each.
| Target role | Sensible first credential | Sensible second step | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salesforce Administrator | Platform Administrator | Platform App Builder or Platform Administrator II | The most direct match between cert and job title |
| Business Analyst | Platform Administrator | Business Analyst | Check the Business Analyst exam guide for its current prerequisites before booking |
| Project Manager | Platform Foundations, or none yet | A project management credential, if the postings ask for one | Many PM postings care more about delivery history than a Salesforce exam |
| Product Owner | Platform Foundations or Platform Administrator | Agentforce Specialist, if the product uses AI agents | Pick the admin exam if you'll configure the org yourself |
| ServiceNow Developer | Not a Salesforce cert | ServiceNow's own entry certification | A different platform with its own training and exams |
| Cloud Operations | Not a Salesforce cert | A cloud provider's entry certification | Salesforce credentials rarely appear in these postings |

The quickest way to check is to read ten job postings for the role you want and count which certifications they name. If most of them name Platform Administrator, that's your answer. If none of them name a Salesforce exam, spend the time on a project instead.
Is Agentforce Specialist a good first certification?
Agentforce Specialist is usually not the best first certification for a career changer, even though it's the one getting the most attention. Salesforce lists no hard prerequisite for it, and it costs the same $200 USD as Platform Administrator. But Salesforce describes certified holders as people with "deep understanding of both Salesforce platform configuration and Agentforce capabilities." Without the platform half, the AI half is hard to use in an interview or on the job. The more common order is Platform Administrator first, then Agentforce Specialist once you can build in an org.
There is one case where it can make sense early: you already work in Salesforce as an end user or power user, you know the setup menus, and your target employer is hiring for Agentforce work specifically. Even then, check whether the postings you want name the admin exam as well.
What does the first Salesforce certification really cost?
The first Salesforce certification costs $75 USD to $200 USD to register, and the study material can cost nothing. What catches people off guard is the retake. A failed attempt at Platform Administrator costs another $100 USD, and Salesforce's retake policy adds waiting periods between attempts.
| Cost item | Amount | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Platform Administrator exam | $200 USD | Per attempt, tax excluded |
| Platform Administrator retake | $100 USD | 50 percent of the original price, tax excluded |
| Platform Foundations exam | $75 USD | Retakes are free |
| Wait after a first failed attempt | 24 hours | Before you can register again |
| Wait after a second failed attempt | 14 days | After a third failure, you wait for the next release cycle |
| Trailhead learning and Trailhead Playground | $0 | Free Salesforce account |
| Blazer2Role Certification Track | $999 USD one-time | Study plan, practice exams, weekly check-ins; the Salesforce exam fee is not included |
Source: Salesforce Help, Certification Exam Pricing and Retake Policy for Salesforce Certification Exams; blazer2role.com/pricing, as of September 2026.
The Salesforce exam fee is not included in any Blazer2Role tier. If you buy the Certification Track, you still pay Salesforce to sit the exam. Trailhead covers the exam content for free, and for the content alone it's enough. What a paid track adds is structure and someone checking in each week, which is worth paying for only if you've tried studying alone and stalled. All tiers are on the pricing page.
How do you prepare for your first Salesforce certification without a bootcamp?
You can prepare for Platform Administrator or Platform Foundations using only free Salesforce resources, as long as you pair reading with hands-on work. Here's a schedule you can follow. It isn't a promise about how long it will take you.
- Read the official exam guide first. It lists the topic areas and their weightings. Plan your study time around the heaviest sections.
- Work through the matching Trailhead trailmix. Salesforce publishes a prep path for each exam on Trailhead.
- Build in a Trailhead Playground. Create objects, fields, a flow, a report, and a dashboard yourself. Reading about a feature isn't the same as setting it up.
- Take timed practice questions. Use them to find weak topics, not to memorize answers. Scenario questions punish memorization.
- Book the exam when your practice scores are steady. Booking a date early gives you a deadline, but leave room to move it once.
Which route fits you, in two questions?
Most readers need one of three routes, and two questions sort out which. Every answer below matches the tables above.
Have you already chosen a target role?
No, not yet
Don't book an exam yet. Pick the role first; the career change to tech guide walks through how. If you want help making the call, the Launch Package is $599 USD one-time and includes a 60-minute 1-on-1 coaching session.
Yes, a Salesforce admin or analyst role
Platform Administrator first, studied on Trailhead. You may not need to buy anything. If you want weekly accountability, the Certification Track is $999 USD one-time, and the Salesforce exam fee is separate.
Yes, and I'm already certified but not getting interviews
Skip the Certification Track. Your gap is packaging. Branding Support at $250 USD one-time covers a resume rewrite, LinkedIn optimization, and one coaching session. It includes no course.
This is a rough sort, not advice. The 1-on-1 session in every package is where the real recommendation happens.
Exam names, fees, and the retake policy come from Salesforce Help and Trailhead credential pages, read September 24, 2026. The July 2026 renames and February 2027 retirements come from Salesforce's announcement as summarized by Salesforce Time and Salesforce Ben, read the same day. Prices come from blazer2role.com/pricing. Blazer2Role has no pass-rate or member outcome data, so this page contains none. The role pairings are general guidance based on how job postings name certifications, not a measured study.
What's a sensible next step?
Before you book any exam, check whether the certification actually shows up in the jobs you want. You can score your resume against a job post on the Blazer2Role homepage to see where your gap is. If it's the certification, Trailhead is free. If you want structure on top, the Certification Track is on the pricing page.
Questions people ask about which Salesforce certification to get first
Which Salesforce certification should I get first?
For most career changers, Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator is the first certification to get. It costs $200 USD to register and $100 USD to retake, tax excluded, and it covers the platform the other Salesforce exams build on. If you want a cheaper warm-up, Platform Foundations costs $75 USD with free retakes, but it's an entry-level credential.
Can I get a Salesforce certification with no experience?
Yes. Neither Platform Foundations nor Platform Administrator requires a job in Salesforce first, and both can be studied for free on Trailhead. Salesforce describes Platform Foundations as a fit for people with up to 6 months of user experience. For Platform Administrator, build real practice in a free Trailhead Playground, because the exam uses scenario questions.
What is the easiest Salesforce certification?
Platform Foundations is the most entry-level Salesforce certification for the platform, and it's the cheapest at $75 USD with free retakes. Salesforce aims it at people with up to 6 months of user experience. Easiest isn't the same as most useful, though. For admin and analyst roles, Platform Administrator is the closer match to the job itself.
Should I get the Agentforce Specialist certification first?
Usually not. Agentforce Specialist has no hard prerequisite and costs $200 USD, the same as Platform Administrator. But Salesforce describes its holders as understanding both platform configuration and Agentforce. Most career changers get more from Platform Administrator first, then add Agentforce Specialist once they can build in an org.
Can a Salesforce certification get you a job?
A certification alone rarely gets you a job. It shows you know the platform, but hiring managers also look for proof you can apply it: a project, relevant work history, and a resume written for the role. Blazer2Role's own FAQ says, "We do not guarantee job placement," and no honest program can promise one.
Did the Salesforce Administrator certification change its name?
Yes. The certification is now called Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator; it was formerly Salesforce Certified Administrator. In July 2026 Salesforce renamed 16 more certifications, including Sales Cloud Consultant, now Agentforce Sales Consultant. If you hold a renamed certification, it updates on your Trailblazer profile automatically.
What is the short version?
For most career changers, the first Salesforce certification is Platform Administrator at $200 USD, studied for free on Trailhead. Platform Foundations is a cheaper warm-up, Agentforce Specialist works best as a second step, and for project management, ServiceNow, or cloud operations roles the first credential may not be a Salesforce one at all. Check the jobs you want before you book.
