Marketing Cloud or Salesforce Admin: Which Fits Marketers?
- No computer science degree required
- Built for 3+ years of professional experience
- Salesforce exam fee never bundled into a tier
If you have spent years in marketing, a Salesforce career can look like it splits in two. One road is the classic Salesforce admin role, built around the core platform that sales and service teams use. The other is Marketing Cloud, where your campaign, email, and audience skills seem to carry straight over. Both are real careers, and the right one depends less on which is "better" and more on what kind of work you want to do every day. This guide explains what Marketing Cloud is in 2026, how the two paths differ, which certifications fit each one, what the job market shows, and how to choose. If you want a wider look at your options first, read our guide to Salesforce job titles besides admin.
For many marketers, Marketing Cloud is the more natural fit, because it builds on email, segmentation, and campaign skills you already have. Salesforce admin is broader and opens more kinds of employers. Marketing Cloud roles can also ask for SQL and campaign experience, so the right pick depends on the work you enjoy, not only your background.

What Marketing Cloud is in 2026
Marketing Cloud is Salesforce's family of marketing products, and its names changed recently. At Dreamforce 2025, Salesforce grouped its marketing products under a new umbrella name, Agentforce Marketing, according to Clever Touch's explainer published in November 2025.
- Marketing Cloud Engagement: the product most people still call Marketing Cloud, used for email, mobile messaging, and customer journeys, mostly by business-to-consumer brands.
- Marketing Cloud Account Engagement: the product formerly called Pardot, used mainly by business-to-business teams for lead nurturing and scoring.
- Marketing Cloud Next: the newer generation of Salesforce marketing tools, built on Data 360 and Agentforce, with agents for creating, orchestrating, and activating campaigns.
- Still supported: the same explainer says there are no immediate plans to retire Engagement or Account Engagement.
Here is the first honest concession: these name changes can make job posts confusing. One company may ask for "SFMC," another for "Marketing Cloud Engagement," and a third for "Agentforce Marketing," all for similar work. When you read posts, look at the tools and tasks listed, not just the product name.
How the two career paths compare
The biggest difference is who you serve. A Salesforce admin supports the whole company's CRM, while a Marketing Cloud specialist supports the marketing team's campaigns. That changes your daily tools, your coworkers, and the skills you lean on.
- Who you work with: admins work with sales, service, and operations teams. Marketing Cloud specialists work mostly with marketers, designers, and data teams.
- What you build: admins build users, permissions, fields, page layouts, reports, and flows. Marketing Cloud specialists build email sends, audiences, journeys, and campaign reports.
- Skills that carry over from marketing: segmentation, email best practice, campaign planning, and reading engagement metrics transfer almost directly to Marketing Cloud.
- Technical edge: Marketing Cloud work often adds SQL for building audiences and AMPscript for personalizing email content. Admin work leans on Flow and data management.
- Breadth: nearly every Salesforce customer needs admin skills. Marketing Cloud is a separate product, so the pool of employers that use it is narrower.
Neither list is harder in general. They are different kinds of work. If you light up when a campaign performs, Marketing Cloud will feel familiar. If you enjoy fixing processes and helping many teams at once, the admin path may suit you better. Our guide to transferable skills for tech jobs can help you name what you already bring.
The certifications on each path
Each path has its own entry certification, and the costs are similar. The admin path starts with Platform Administrator. The Marketing Cloud path usually starts with the email-focused specialist exam, then the Marketing Cloud administrator exam.
- Platform Administrator: 60 scored questions in 105 minutes and a fee of $200 USD plus taxes, per Salesforce's exam guide. Its eight sections include Automation at 15 percent and Data and Analytics Management at 17 percent.
- Marketing Cloud Engagement Specialist, the email exam: $200 USD to register, $100 USD to retake, 60 questions in 90 minutes, and a 67 percent passing score, per K2U's certification summary. Marketing Automation and Subscriber and Data Management are each 26 percent.
- Marketing Cloud Engagement Administrator: Setup is the largest section at 38 percent, per Trailhead's exam prep module. Salesforce Ben suggests 3 to 6 months of hands-on experience before taking it.
- The order people follow: Salesforce Ben calls the email exam a sensible step before the administrator exam, and the email exam is a prerequisite for the Marketing Cloud Developer exam.
A practical tip: do not collect both sets of badges at once. Pick the path first, then the exams. Our guide to choosing your first Salesforce certification walks through that decision.
What the job market shows
Marketing Cloud roles tend to pay more, but there are fewer of them, at least in the one market with easy public data. IT Jobs Watch tracks UK permanent job ads, and its numbers for the six months to October 2026 show the trade-off clearly.
- Marketing Cloud ads: 72 UK permanent job ads cited Salesforce Marketing Cloud, down from 89 in the same period of 2025, per IT Jobs Watch.
- Marketing Cloud pay: the median advertised salary was £62,500, based on 44 quoted salaries.
- Salesforce Administrator ads: 83 UK permanent job ads, up from 43 a year earlier, with a median salary of £40,000, per IT Jobs Watch.
- What the gap suggests: Marketing Cloud ads often target experienced specialists, while admin titles include more junior roles.
A second honest concession: these are small UK samples, not US numbers, and one job title does not capture every role. A Marketing Cloud ad can also be titled "CRM marketing manager" or "email developer." Treat the figures as a direction, then count posts in your own city or remote market before you decide. Pay and demand vary a lot by location.
How to choose your path
You can test both paths in a few weeks before committing months of study. A third honest concession: no free practice environment fully copies a company's Marketing Cloud setup, so your first Marketing Cloud job will still involve learning their data and processes. The goal is to know which kind of work you want to do.
- Count jobs in your market. Search 20 posts for each path in your city or remote market, and note titles, pay ranges, and required years.
- List your marketing skills. Write down your experience with email, segmentation, testing, and campaign reporting.
- Try one Trailhead module from each path. Pick an admin module and a Marketing Cloud Engagement module, and notice which one you enjoy more.
- Learn basic SQL. It helps on both paths and is often required for Marketing Cloud audiences.
- Pick one first certification. Platform Administrator for the admin path, or the email specialist exam for Marketing Cloud.
- Build one portfolio piece. Document a sample journey or an admin build, and explain the business problem it solves.

Questions people ask
Is Marketing Cloud a good career for marketers?
For many marketers, yes. Marketing Cloud builds on skills you already use, such as email campaigns, audience segmentation, testing, and reporting. In the UK, Marketing Cloud job ads showed a higher median salary than Salesforce admin ads in 2026, but there were fewer of them. Expect to add SQL and some AMPscript as you grow in the role.
Should I learn Salesforce admin before Marketing Cloud?
You do not have to. The two products have separate certification paths, and the email specialist exam has no prerequisites. Admin skills still help, because many Marketing Cloud setups connect to the core Salesforce CRM. If you want the widest choice of employers, start with admin. If you want to use your marketing background right away, start with Marketing Cloud.
What is the Marketing Cloud email specialist exam?
It is the entry exam for Marketing Cloud Engagement, now listed as Marketing Cloud Engagement Specialist. K2U lists it at $200 USD with a $100 USD retake, 60 questions in 90 minutes, and a 67 percent passing score. Its biggest sections are Marketing Automation and Subscriber and Data Management, at 26 percent each.
Is Marketing Cloud being replaced by Agentforce Marketing?
Not exactly. Agentforce Marketing is the umbrella name Salesforce gave its marketing products at Dreamforce 2025. It covers Marketing Cloud Engagement, Marketing Cloud Account Engagement, formerly Pardot, and the newer Marketing Cloud Next. A November 2025 explainer from Clever Touch said there were no immediate plans to retire Engagement or Account Engagement.
Do Marketing Cloud jobs require coding?
Many do not require full programming, but technical skills help. SQL is common for building audiences, and AMPscript is used to personalize email content. Entry roles focused on campaign building may need little code, while Marketing Cloud developer roles need much more. Check each job post, since the same title can mean very different work.
Which pays more, Marketing Cloud or Salesforce admin?
In UK job ads for the six months to October 2026, the median advertised salary was £62,500 for Marketing Cloud and £40,000 for Salesforce Administrator, per IT Jobs Watch. Those roles are not equal in seniority, and the samples are small. Check pay in your own market, since US and remote salaries can differ a lot.
