What Happens If Your Salesforce Certification Expires?

What Happens If Your Salesforce Certification Expires?
  • No computer science degree required
  • Built for 3+ years of professional experience
  • Salesforce exam fee never bundled into a tier

You passed a Salesforce exam, added the badge to your resume, and moved on to job applications. Then an email arrives about a maintenance due date, and a quiet worry starts: what happens if your Salesforce certification expires, and would you really have to pay for the exam again? The answer is clearer than most forum threads suggest, and the fix is usually small if you catch it early. This guide covers how maintenance works in 2026, what expiration actually costs, and how to keep every credential active. If you are still deciding how many credentials you need in the first place, read our guide on how many Salesforce certifications you really need.

Short answer

If you miss a maintenance due date, your Salesforce certification expires. A recently expired one may be reinstated through a support case, but Salesforce reviews each request and does not guarantee approval. After more than one cycle, you retake the full exam at full price. Maintenance itself is a Trailhead badge, done once a year.

How Salesforce certification maintenance works

Salesforce certifications stay active through a yearly maintenance badge on Trailhead. Per Salesforce's certification maintenance schedule, every certified professional must complete one maintenance badge per year that is specific to their certification. Badges come out with the three Salesforce releases (Spring, Summer, and Winter), and each one is due one year after it is released.

  • Winter '26 badges: available December 11, 2025, and due December 4, 2026, per Salesforce's maintenance schedule. This cycle covers Platform App Builder, Platform Developer, and Data 360 Consultant, among others.
  • Spring '26 badges: available April 23, 2026, and due April 16, 2027. The Platform Administrator badge sits in this cycle, and it also maintains Platform Administrator II and the Agentforce Sales and Agentforce Service Consultant certifications.
  • Summer '26 badges: available August 27, 2026, and due August 20, 2027. Business Analyst and Agentforce Specialist are maintained in this cycle.
  • Time it takes to show: Salesforce says to allow up to 24 hours after you finish a badge before your status updates on the Trailblazer credentials page.

Here is the first honest concession, and it is a good one: maintenance does not cost anything. It is a Trailhead badge you complete with the Trailblazer account linked to your certification. Nobody needs to sell you a maintenance course. The real cost only shows up if you let the date pass.

Put the due date in your calendar the day the badge comes out, with a reminder 30 days before. Emails are easy to miss; a calendar entry is not.

What happens when a certification expires

When you miss a maintenance due date, every certification maintained by that badge expires at once. Salesforce's Platform Administrator exam is the clearest example, because so many other credentials depend on it.

  • One badge, several certifications: per Salesforce's certification expiration overview, missing a due date means "all of the certifications maintained by that badge will expire." Skip the Platform Administrator badge and Platform Administrator II expires with it.
  • Prerequisites cascade: per the same overview, "If a prerequisite cert expires, dependent certs also expire." Re-earning only Platform Administrator does not restore the certifications that depended on it.
  • Your profile shows it: your Trailblazer profile lists your earned certifications and their status, so an employer who checks your credentials will see the expired status.
  • No grace period is published: Salesforce calls its emails reminders and says it is your responsibility to finish maintenance by the published due date.

For a job seeker, the practical problem is your resume. If a hiring manager verifies a credential you list as active and finds it expired, that raises a trust question you do not want in an interview. It is worth checking your status before every application round, not only when a reminder email lands.

How to get an expired certification back

There are two paths back, and which one you get depends on how long the certification has been expired.

  • Recently expired: open a support case with Salesforce and request reinstatement. Per Salesforce's expiration overview, "Reinstatement requests are reviewed case-by-case," so approval is possible but not promised.
  • Expired more than one cycle: the standard path is to retake the exam. Salesforce says you re-earn each certification individually by completing its full, proctored exam.
  • The price changes: per Salesforce's retake policy, retaking at "its full price is the standard path to recertification." The 50 percent retake rate is for failed attempts, not expired certifications. For Platform Administrator, that means $200 USD instead of $100 USD, tax excluded.
  • Attempt limits still apply: you get 3 attempts at the same exam per release cycle, with a 24 hour wait after the first failure and 14 days after the second, per Salesforce's retake policy.

A second honest concession: no training provider can reinstate a certification for you, including Blazer2Role. Reinstatement is a Salesforce decision made through a Salesforce support case. If someone offers to "restore" an expired credential for a fee, walk away.

Which certifications expire and which do not

Not every Salesforce credential follows the same rules, and the differences matter if you are choosing what to earn first.

  • Foundations certifications: per Salesforce's maintenance schedule, they require no maintenance and do not expire once earned. Platform Foundations costs $75 USD with free retakes, per Salesforce's exam pricing page.
  • Administrator, Consultant, Developer, and Specialist certifications: these need a yearly maintenance badge. Platform Administrator, Business Analyst, Agentforce Specialist, and Data 360 Consultant all fall here.
  • Accredited Professional credentials: Salesforce says no action is needed right now because the program's maintenance is being revamped. Separately, 24 credentials, including Process Automation Accredited Professional, retire on February 1, 2027.
  • Renamed certifications: Salesforce renamed 16 certifications on July 24, 2026. A rename is not an expiration; your credential updates on your Trailblazer profile, and maintenance continues under the new name.
  • Architect paths: some architect credentials need several badges at once, and the Technical Architect credential expires if either of its prerequisite architect certifications expires.

A third honest concession: an active certification is not the same as a job offer. Keeping it current protects what you already earned, but hiring managers still look for projects, relevant work history, and a resume written for the role. If you are certified and still not getting interviews, our guide to being Salesforce certified with no job yet covers what usually fills that gap.

How to never miss a maintenance deadline

A missed deadline is almost always a calendar problem, not a knowledge problem. The maintenance modules are short and cover the newest release features, so the work is manageable once it is scheduled. Use this plan the week you pass any exam.

  1. Write down which badge maintains each certification. Check Salesforce's maintenance schedule table, because one badge can cover several credentials.
  2. Add every due date to your calendar. Set reminders at 30 days and 7 days before each date.
  3. Use the right Trailblazer account. Complete the badge while signed in to the account linked to your certification, or the badge will not count.
  4. Finish early in the cycle. Badges open months before they are due, so complete yours in the first few weeks.
  5. Check your status 24 hours later. Confirm the certification shows as active on the Trailblazer credentials page before you list it on a new resume.
  6. Act fast if it slips. If a certification just expired, open a support case right away instead of waiting a full cycle.

Questions people ask

Do Salesforce certifications expire?
Most do, if you skip maintenance. Administrator, Consultant, Developer, and Specialist certifications need one Trailhead maintenance badge per year, and they expire when you miss the due date. Foundations certifications, such as Platform Foundations, are the exception: Salesforce says they require no maintenance and do not expire once earned.

How long is a Salesforce certification valid?
A Salesforce certification stays valid as long as you complete its yearly maintenance badge on Trailhead. Each badge is due one year after it is released. For example, the Spring '26 Platform Administrator badge was released April 23, 2026, and is due April 16, 2027. Miss that date and the certification expires.

What happens if I don't complete Salesforce certification maintenance?
Your certification expires, along with every other certification maintained by the same badge and any certification that depends on it as a prerequisite. If it expired recently, you can ask Salesforce for reinstatement through a support case. If it has been expired for more than one cycle, you need to retake the full exam.

Can I renew an expired Salesforce certification?
Sometimes. For a recently expired certification, open a Salesforce support case and request reinstatement; Salesforce reviews each request and does not guarantee approval. Once it has been expired for more than one cycle, the standard path is to retake the full, proctored exam at its full price, not the discounted retake fee.

How much does Salesforce certification maintenance cost?
Maintenance itself is done through a Trailhead badge, and Salesforce does not list a fee for it. The expensive part is missing it. Retaking an expired Platform Administrator exam costs the full $200 USD, tax excluded, instead of the $100 USD retake fee that applies to failed attempts.

Do I need to retake the exam if my certification was renamed?
No. Salesforce renamed 16 certifications on July 24, 2026, and a rename does not expire anything. Your credential updates on your Trailblazer profile and you keep maintaining it under the new name. Just make sure your resume and LinkedIn profile use the current official name.
