How Long to Get Salesforce Certified? A Realistic Schedule
- No computer science degree required
- Built for 3+ years of professional experience
- Instructor holds 10 industry certifications
Salesforce does not publish a study time for its certifications, which is why answers online range from two weeks to a year. What Salesforce does publish is more useful: how much hands-on experience it expects, how the exam is weighted, and what it takes to keep the credential. This guide turns those facts into a schedule you can adjust to your own week. Not sure which certification to start with? Read which Salesforce certification to take first.
Salesforce recommends 6 or more months of hands-on experience before the Platform Administrator exam, so a 6-month study schedule is a realistic starting point for most career changers. It can be shorter if you already use Salesforce at work. Salesforce publishes no official study time, and anyone quoting a fixed number of weeks is guessing.
How long does it take to get Salesforce certified?
Getting Salesforce certified takes most career changers about 6 months of steady study and practice, because Salesforce's own exam guide recommends "6 or more months of experience as a Salesforce Platform Administrator" for its most common entry exam. That is a recommendation for experience, not a rule; the exam has no prerequisites, and you can book it whenever you feel ready.
The real variable is how much of that experience you already have. Someone who has used Salesforce as a sales rep or service agent for two years already knows half the screens. Someone who has never logged in is learning the vocabulary and the platform at the same time. Treat any timeline, including ours, as a schedule you set for yourself, not a promise.
What does the exam actually involve?
The Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator exam is 60 scored multiple-choice questions in 105 minutes, with a 68 percent passing score for the English version. It costs $200 USD per attempt and $100 USD per retake, plus applicable taxes, and you can take it at a testing center or online with a proctor.
| Exam fact | Platform Administrator | Agentforce Specialist |
|---|---|---|
| Scored questions | 60, plus up to 5 unscored | 60, plus up to 5 unscored |
| Time | 105 minutes | 105 minutes |
| Passing score | 68 percent (English) | 72 percent |
| Registration fee | $200 USD plus taxes | $200 USD plus taxes |
| Retake fee | $100 USD plus taxes | $100 USD plus taxes |
| Recommended experience | 6 or more months as an admin | 1 year of platform configuration |

The Agentforce Specialist column is there because many people ask whether they can skip straight to AI. Salesforce recommends a full year of platform configuration first, so for most career changers the administrator exam comes first. We explain what that AI exam tests in the Agentforce Specialist certification guide.
What does a 6-month schedule look like?
A 6-month schedule works best when each month follows the exam outline, so the heaviest sections get the most time. The administrator exam has eight weighted sections, from Data and Analytics Management at 17 percent down to Agentforce at 8 percent.
| Month | Exam sections to cover | Combined weight | Hands-on goal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Configuration and Setup; Object Manager and Lightning App Builder | 30 percent | Create users, a custom object, and a page layout in a practice org |
| 2 | Data and Analytics Management | 17 percent | Import a data file and build three reports and one dashboard |
| 3 | Automation | 15 percent | Build two record-triggered flows and one approval process |
| 4 | Sales and Marketing Applications; Service and Support Applications | 20 percent | Set up a sales process and a case queue with assignment rules |
| 5 | Productivity and Collaboration; Agentforce | 18 percent | Configure a basic agent and review what it can access |
| 6 | Practice exams and weakest sections | Review | Book the exam once practice scores clear the passing mark with room to spare |

What makes it faster or slower?
Your starting point changes the schedule more than any study method does. The biggest accelerator is having used Salesforce at work; the biggest brake is studying only by reading, without building anything in a practice org.
| Your starting point | Suggested schedule | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Daily Salesforce user at work | Shorter than 6 months | You already know objects, reports, and the sales or service process |
| Office or operations background, never used Salesforce | About 6 months | Matches Salesforce's recommended experience |
| Fewer than a few hours a week available | Longer than 6 months | Each section needs time in a practice org, not just reading |
| Already failed once | 4 to 8 weeks focused on weak sections | Your results show how you scored by exam section |

Where people lose time: booking the exam too early. A retake costs $100 USD plus taxes, and Salesforce also expects a yearly maintenance module after you pass, so the credential is a commitment, not a one-time event. Getting certified also does not mean getting hired. Blazer2Role's own FAQ says: "We do not guarantee job placement."
What are the steps from today to certified?
There are six steps between today and an active certification, and only one of them costs money if you study on your own. Trailhead, Salesforce's training site, is free and covers what the exam tests.
- Pick the certification. For most career changers that is Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator.
- Open a free practice org on Trailhead. Every month of the schedule assumes you are building, not only reading.
- Follow the 6-month schedule above. Move faster if you already use Salesforce at work.
- Take practice exams. Book only when your scores clear 68 percent with a margin.
- Register and sit the exam. Choose online proctoring or a testing center; budget $200 USD plus taxes.
- Keep it active. Complete the maintenance module on Trailhead once a year.
If you would rather have structure and accountability than a self-made plan, that is what paid help sells. Blazer2Role's Certification Track is $999 USD one-time and includes a personalized study plan, practice exams and resources, weekly accountability check-ins, and cert-specific coaching. The Salesforce exam fee is not included. Compare it with the other packages on our pricing page.
Should you study alone or with help?
Most people can pass the administrator exam studying alone for $200 USD; the questions below sort who is likely to benefit from paying for structure.
Have you started studying for a Salesforce exam before?
Yes, and I stalled or failed
Certification Track, $999 USD one-time, if missed weeks were the problem, because it adds weekly check-ins. If the problem was one or two sections, you may not need to buy anything: restudy the sections your results flagged.
Yes, and I am on track
You may not need to buy anything. Keep following the schedule and budget $200 USD for the exam.

I also need help choosing a role and fixing my resume
Launch Package, $599 USD one-time, covers a coaching session, a resume rewrite, LinkedIn optimization, and curriculum roadmap access. The exam fee is separate.
This is a rough sort, not advice. The 1-on-1 session in every package is where the real recommendation happens.

Questions people ask about getting Salesforce certified
How long does it take to get Salesforce certified?
For most career changers it takes about 6 months, because Salesforce recommends 6 or more months of hands-on experience before the Platform Administrator exam. People who already use Salesforce daily at work can often move faster. Salesforce publishes no official study time, so treat any number as a schedule you set, not a promise.
How many hours should I study for the Salesforce admin exam?
Salesforce does not publish a required number of study hours. It recommends 6 or more months of hands-on admin experience instead. A practical approach is to spend each month on the exam sections with the highest weights, build something in a free practice org every week, and book the exam only when practice scores clear 68 percent comfortably.
Can I pass the Salesforce admin exam in one month?
Some people do, usually because they already use Salesforce every day at work. For someone who has never used the platform, one month rarely covers eight exam sections with hands-on practice, and Salesforce recommends 6 or more months of experience. A failed attempt costs $100 USD to retake, so booking early can end up costing time and money.
How hard is the Salesforce administrator exam?
The Salesforce administrator exam is moderately hard for beginners: 60 scored questions in 105 minutes, and you need 68 percent to pass. Questions often describe a business situation and ask which feature solves it, so hands-on practice matters more than memorizing definitions. Data and Analytics Management carries the most weight, at 17 percent.
Do Salesforce certifications expire?
Salesforce certifications stay active as long as you complete the required maintenance. For the Platform Administrator certification, Salesforce asks holders to complete a maintenance module on Trailhead once a year. If you skip it, the certification lapses, so plan a few hours each year to keep it current.
Can I take the Salesforce certification exam online?
Yes. Salesforce delivers the Platform Administrator exam as a proctored exam either online or onsite at a testing center. Online proctoring lets you test from home, but you need a quiet room, a reliable internet connection, and a computer that meets the proctoring requirements. The fee is the same either way: $200 USD plus applicable taxes.
What is the short version?
Plan on about 6 months to get Salesforce certified if you are new to the platform, because that is the experience Salesforce itself recommends. Follow the exam weights month by month, build something every week in a free practice org, book the $200 USD exam when practice scores clear 68 percent with room to spare, and keep the credential active with a yearly maintenance module.
