Do Salesforce Jobs Still Need a Cover Letter in 2026?
- No computer science degree required
- Built for 3+ years of professional experience
- Salesforce exam fee never bundled into a tier
You finished your resume, found a Salesforce admin role, and then you see it: a box that says "Cover letter (optional)." Many job seekers skip it, because writing one takes time and it feels like nobody reads them anymore. The data says otherwise, at least for some roles. For career changers, a cover letter is often the only place to explain why a teacher, nurse, or sales rep is now applying for a Salesforce job. This guide covers what hiring managers say, when a cover letter matters most, when you can skip it, how to use AI without sounding like AI, and a short formula you can reuse. If your resume needs work first, start with our guide to improving your Salesforce resume with AI.
Often, yes, but not every time. Most hiring managers in recent surveys say they still read cover letters, and a short, specific one helps career changers explain their switch. If an application has no place to add one, skip it. A generic or obviously AI-written letter can hurt more than sending none.

What hiring managers say about cover letters
Cover letters are not dead. Surveys of hiring managers keep finding that many of them read the letter, even when it is optional.
- Most still read them: 83 percent of hiring managers always or often read cover letters, per Resume Genius's cover letter statistics, based on a survey of 625 U.S. hiring managers.
- Optional does not mean ignored: the same survey found 73 percent still read cover letters at companies that do not require them.
- Some read it first: 45 percent said they read the cover letter before the resume.
- It can change the outcome: 49 percent said a strong cover letter can get an otherwise weaker candidate an interview.
- Tech companies vary: the same page cites a 2022 Ladders survey in which 65 percent of startups required a cover letter, compared with 48 percent of the largest tech companies.
Here is the first honest concession: these surveys come from resume companies that sell cover letter tools, and the Resume Genius survey was run a few years ago. Treat the numbers as a strong signal, not a promise that every recruiter reads every letter.
When a cover letter matters most
Some Salesforce applications gain a lot from a letter. These are the situations where it is worth the extra 30 minutes.
- You are changing careers: your resume shows your past job titles. The letter explains how that work connects to Salesforce, such as running reports, training users, or fixing a messy process.
- You are short on one requirement: a letter lets you address a gap directly. Our guide to applying without every requirement shows which gaps are worth explaining.
- The company is small: smaller teams and consulting partners often have a person, not just software, reading each application.
- The post asks a question: if the job post asks why you want the role or tells you to mention a word, the letter is part of the test.
- You have a strong project: one sentence about a Salesforce project you built can carry more weight than a list of skills.

When you can skip it
A cover letter is not always worth it. Spend your time where it counts.
- There is no place for it: if the form has no upload field or text box, do not force a letter into another field.
- It is a one-click application: quick-apply buttons often send only your profile, so effort is better spent on your LinkedIn profile.
- A staffing agency is screening: agencies often care more about your resume keywords and a quick phone screen.
- You would send a generic letter: a "To Whom It May Concern" letter that could fit any job adds little and can make you look careless.
A second honest concession: skipping the letter on an optional field rarely gets you rejected by itself. But when two candidates look alike, a short, specific letter can be the reason one of them gets the call.
Using AI without sounding like AI
AI tools can help you start a letter, but hiring managers notice when the whole letter sounds generated. A TopResume survey of 600 U.S. hiring managers from May 2025 shows where the line sits.
- Help is fine: 52 percent said using AI for proofreading or drafting support is acceptable, as long as the result sounds human.
- Heavy use is a risk: 20 percent saw heavy reliance on AI as a red flag.
- Some will reject you: 19.6 percent said they would reject a candidate with an AI-generated resume or cover letter.
- Add what AI cannot know: your real numbers, the name of a project you built, and why this company matters to you.
- Read it out loud: if a sentence sounds like something you would never say, rewrite it in your own words.
A third honest concession: some hiring managers will not mind an AI-assisted letter at all. But you cannot tell in advance which reader you will get, so keep the final version clearly yours.
A short Salesforce cover letter formula
Resume Genius found hiring managers prefer letters of about 400 words. For a Salesforce role, shorter is often better. Use this structure.
- Open with the role and one hook. Name the job title and one reason you fit, such as your certification or a project.
- Connect your past work. Pick one result from your old career and tie it to a Salesforce task, like cleaning data or training users.
- Show proof of Salesforce skills. Mention your certification and one portfolio project. Our guide to listing Salesforce projects shows how to describe one in a sentence.
- Answer the job post. Address one of the three problems you circled in the post.
- Close with a clear next step. Say you would welcome a conversation, and thank them.
- Check the basics. Use the hiring manager's name if you can find it, save as a PDF, and keep it to one page.

Questions people ask
Do Salesforce jobs still need a cover letter in 2026?
Many do not require one, but it often helps. Surveys of hiring managers find most still read cover letters, even when they are optional. For career changers, a short letter is often the best place to explain how past work connects to Salesforce. Skip it only when there is no place to add one or the letter would be generic.
Should I write a cover letter if it says optional?
Usually, yes, if you can make it specific. Resume Genius reports that 73 percent of hiring managers still read cover letters at companies that do not require them. A short letter that answers the job post can set you apart. A generic letter adds little, so only send one you have tailored to that role.
How long should a Salesforce cover letter be?
Keep it to one page, and shorter is fine. Resume Genius found that hiring managers prefer letters of about 400 words, and many readers spend less than two minutes on them. Three or four short paragraphs are enough: the role and your hook, your past work, your Salesforce proof, and a clear close.
Can I use ChatGPT or another AI tool to write my cover letter?
You can use AI for drafting or proofreading, but make the final letter yours. In a 2025 TopResume survey, 52 percent of hiring managers said AI help is acceptable if the result sounds human, while 19.6 percent said they would reject an AI-generated letter. Add real numbers, project names, and your own voice before sending it.
What should a career changer put in a Salesforce cover letter?
Focus on the bridge between your old job and Salesforce. Name one result from your past work, such as a process you improved or people you trained, and tie it to an admin task. Then mention your certification and one hands-on project. That gives the reader proof, not just interest, in a few short sentences.
Does a cover letter matter if I was referred?
It matters less, but it can still help. A referral gets your application noticed, and the letter gives the reader context your contact may not have shared. If the form allows a letter, mention your contact by name in the first line, then keep the rest short and specific to the role.
