Online Proctored vs Test Center: Taking a Salesforce Exam
- No computer science degree required
- Built for 3+ years of professional experience
- Salesforce exam fee never bundled into a tier
You studied for weeks, you are ready to book, and the registration screen asks one last question: online or test center? It looks like a small choice. It is not. The questions are identical either way, but the day itself is completely different, and one option quietly moves every technical risk onto your own laptop and your own internet. This guide compares the Salesforce exam online proctored route with the test center route so you can pick the one that fits your home, your equipment, and your nerves. If you are still preparing, start with our guide on how to pass the Salesforce admin exam on the first try, then come back here to book.
Both options deliver the same Salesforce exam at the same fee through Pearson VUE. Choose online proctoring if you have a quiet private room, a personal computer, and steady internet. Choose a test center if any of those is shaky. Online is more convenient, but it puts every technical risk on you.

What stays the same either way
Since July 21, 2025, Salesforce certification exams have been delivered by Pearson VUE, and you register through Trailhead Academy. When you click Register Now on a certification page, you see two choices: take the exam online with a remote proctor, or take it in person at a testing center. After you choose, you are sent to Pearson VUE to pick a date, a time, and a payment method.
The delivery choice does not change the exam itself. Using the Platform Administrator exam as the example, here is what applies to both routes, per the official Salesforce exam guide:
- Questions: 60 multiple choice and multiple select questions, per the Salesforce exam guide.
- Time: 105 minutes to complete the exam, per the Salesforce exam guide.
- Registration fee: USD 200 plus applicable taxes, per the Salesforce exam guide.
- Retake fee: USD 100 plus applicable taxes, per the Salesforce exam guide.
- Delivery: proctored onsite at a testing center or in an online proctored environment, per the Salesforce exam guide.
- Reference materials: none. No notes, books, or websites in either setting.
Here is the first honest point: the delivery option will not make the exam easier or harder. A quiet test center cannot rescue a candidate who is not ready, and a comfortable chair at home will not either. If you are unsure about your timeline, read how long it takes to get Salesforce certified before you put money down.
How the Salesforce exam online proctored option works
Online exams run on OnVUE, Pearson VUE's remote proctoring software. You take the exam on your own computer while a proctor watches through your webcam and microphone, and the session is recorded. Pearson publishes the rules for Salesforce candidates on its Salesforce OnVUE requirements page, last updated in September 2026. The main ones:
- Computer: Windows 10 or macOS 14 or higher, with a working webcam, microphone, and speaker. No headphones or headsets, per Pearson VUE.
- Screen: one display only. Extra monitors must be disconnected, per Pearson VUE.
- Internet: at least 6 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload on a stable connection, per Pearson VUE.
- Network: no VPNs, corporate networks, or public and shared networks, per Pearson VUE.
- Room: private and quiet. Offices, libraries, and coffee shops are prohibited spaces, per Pearson VUE.
- Desk: empty except for the computer and a drink in an unmarked container. No phone, notes, paper, or pens, per Pearson VUE.
- ID: a valid government issued photo ID whose name exactly matches your exam booking, per Pearson VUE.
Check-in opens 30 minutes before your appointment. In that window you complete the technology checks, photograph yourself and your ID, and record a 360 degree scan of your room. During the exam you must stay in view of the webcam, you may not read questions aloud, and you may not touch your phone. For working out answers you get a digital whiteboard on screen. Physical scratch paper is not allowed.
Two rules catch career changers most often. First, the network rule makes a work laptop a risky choice, because many company machines force a VPN or block new software. Use a personal computer. Second, Pearson states that if any requirement is not met at check-in, you cannot test and your fee is forfeited. The proctor can chat with you, but cannot pause your exam, extend your time, or troubleshoot your device.
That is the second honest point. Online proctoring is convenient, and it is also unforgiving. Run the official OnVUE system test on the same device and the same network you will use on exam day, and do it before you pay.
How a Pearson VUE test center works
At a test center you use their computer, their internet, and their room. Your job is to arrive on time with the right ID. Pearson's check-in guide for its professional centers describes the process like this:
- Arrival: your confirmation email tells you how early to arrive, per Pearson VUE.
- Identity: staff check your ID, capture a digital signature, and take your photo. Some exams add a palm scan, per Pearson VUE.
- Belongings: phone, watch, wallet, and bag go into a locker. Pearson describes a zero tolerance policy for electronic devices in the testing room.
- Screening: you turn out your pockets and roll up your sleeves before you enter, per Pearson VUE.
- Notes: you receive an erasable note board, then staff walk you to your workstation, per Pearson VUE.
- Monitoring: a proctor watches the room, and audio and video of the session are recorded, per Pearson VUE.
ID rules vary by program, and Pearson notes that many programs ask for two forms of identification. Read your Salesforce confirmation email closely instead of guessing.
The trade is simple. You give up convenience and get stability. If a test center computer freezes, staff are in the room to deal with it, and it was never your equipment at fault. The costs are real, though. You have to travel, appointment times are limited to the hours each center is open, and smaller cities may have no center nearby. When you book, Pearson lets you compare availability at up to three centers at once, which helps you find a workable slot.
Online proctored vs test center, side by side
The biggest practical difference after equipment is the deadline for changing your booking. Salesforce publishes it in its exam reschedule and cancellation policy. Here is how the two routes compare:
- Reschedule or cancel deadline, online: at least 24 hours before the exam start time, per Salesforce Help.
- Reschedule or cancel deadline, test center: at least 48 hours before the exam start time, per Salesforce Help.
- No-show: on either route you are charged the full exam fee. A voucher used for a missed test center exam is forfeited, per Salesforce Help.
- Reschedule limit: reschedules are not permitted beyond one year from the original purchase date, per Salesforce Help.
- Scratch work: digital whiteboard online, erasable note board at a center, per Pearson VUE.
- Equipment and internet: yours online, the center's in person.
- Check-in: self run and starting 30 minutes before the appointment online, staff run at a center.
- If technology fails: Salesforce lists a technical or system failure, such as an OnVUE outage or a crash during the exam, as grounds for an exception. You must open a case with Salesforce Help and provide supporting documentation.
A warning about older advice: many blog posts still quote a 72 hour test center deadline and a USD 75 late fee. The Salesforce Help page we checked on October 13, 2026 states 48 hours and 24 hours. Policies like this change, so read the page again on the day you book.
There is also a time limited offer worth knowing about. Per the Salesforce certification team's announcement in the Trailblazer Community, Salesforce and Pearson are running a retake promotion for exams completed between September 29 and November 17, 2026, with the retake scheduled between January 4 and April 7, 2027. You have to opt in before you schedule, and eligibility rules apply, so check the official terms before you count on it.
Which one should you choose?
The third honest point: there is no universally better option. Candidates in the Trailblazer Community describe smooth OnVUE sessions, and candidates in other certification programs describe lost appointments after a software or connection problem. Your own setup decides which story you get.
- Choose online proctored if: you have a room with a door that closes, a personal computer that passes the system test, a wired or strong home connection, and nobody streaming video on the same network during your slot.
- Choose a test center if: you share your home, your only computer belongs to an employer, your internet drops, or you know that worrying about the webcam rules will cost you focus.
- Choose a test center if: you think better with a physical note board than with a mouse driven whiteboard.
Whichever route you take, this short plan removes most avoidable problems:
- Run the OnVUE system test on your exam day device and network before you register.
- If the test fails, or you cannot guarantee a private room, book a test center.
- Check that the name on your ID matches your Trailhead Academy booking exactly.
- Add the reschedule deadline to your calendar: 24 hours before for online, 48 hours before for a center.
- The night before, restart your computer and clear your desk, or plan your route and travel time.
- Start check-in the moment it opens. For online exams that is 30 minutes before the appointment.
The exam day is one step in a longer plan. If you have not settled which credential to sit first, see which Salesforce certification to get first and how many certifications you really need. Once you pass, keep the certification from expiring by completing the maintenance on time.

Questions people ask
Can you take the Salesforce certification exam online?
Yes. Every proctored Salesforce certification exam can be scheduled as an online proctored exam or as an onsite exam at a testing center. You make the choice on Trailhead Academy when you click Register Now, and Pearson VUE delivers both versions. Online exams run on Pearson's OnVUE software on your own computer.
Is the Salesforce online proctored exam harder than the test center exam?
No. The questions, the time limit, and the fee are the same on both routes. What changes is the environment. Online, you manage your own computer, internet, and room under strict webcam rules. At a center, staff manage the setup. Some people find one setting more stressful, which can affect performance.
Can I use scratch paper during a Salesforce online proctored exam?
No. Pearson's rules for Salesforce OnVUE exams require an empty desk with no paper, notes, or pens. Candidates get a digital whiteboard inside the exam for working out answers. At a test center you receive an erasable note board instead, which many people find faster to use than a mouse.
What happens if my internet disconnects during the Salesforce exam?
Pearson's guidance is to close and relaunch OnVUE if your computer freezes or disconnects. If the problem continues, contact customer service. Salesforce lists a technical or system failure as a possible exception to its reschedule policy, but you need to open a case with Salesforce Help and supply documentation. A new attempt is not automatic.
How early should I check in for a Salesforce exam?
For an online proctored exam, begin check-in 30 minutes before your appointment. You will complete technology checks, ID photos, and a room scan in that window. For a test center, your confirmation email states how early to arrive. Add travel and parking time on top of that.
Can I reschedule my Salesforce exam?
Yes. Per Salesforce Help, online proctored exams can be rescheduled or canceled up to 24 hours before the start time, and test center exams up to 48 hours before. Open the exam in Trailhead Academy and select Modify Registration. If you miss the exam without contacting Salesforce Help first, you are charged the full fee.
